Constructing a Legal Knowledge-base with Partial Information

چکیده
In legal reasoning systems, a typical application of normative reasoning, partial information plays an important role in the representation and reasoning of legal knowledge. To construct a legal knowledge-base with partial information, many features are required of knowledge representation languages. In this paper, we discuss the representation of knowledge-bases and their re nement through our experimental system, TRIAL. The system is based on the QUIXOT E deductive object-oriented database language. In particular, we point out that three features (knowledge modularization, hypothetical reasoning, and hypothesis generation (abductive reasoning)) are indispensable to the construction of a legal knowledge-base.

Heterogeneous Cooperative Knowledge-Base Systems
Information processing environments have been rapidly changing in many elds: not only changes of network environments and hardware systems, but also enhanced requirements of application systems, database systems, and knowledge-base systems. It is necessary to reconsider how to construct information systems in new environments. For example, in databases, there are many di culties to cope with ad...

Legal reasoning is one application of large-scale knowledge information processing, where arti cial intelligence, natural language processing, databases and other technologies are integrated. It is the target for the next-generation of databases. In order to investigate whether or not the deductive object oriented database (DOOD) language/systemQUIXOT E is e ective in legal reasoing, we are bot...
متن کاملIntelligent Information Retrieval: KONTERM - Automatic Representation of Context Related Terms within a Knowledge Base for a Legal Expert System
Knowledge acquisition constitutes the bottleneck for the creation of legal expert systems. A certain degree of formalism of legal language is an inevitable prerequisite. Our prototype KONTERM deals with that problem by supporting the process of creating a selective thesaurus for a legal information system which can be used for automatic indexing and document classification. This selectivity is ...
متن کاملThe LOIS Project
The legal knowledge base resulting from the LOIS (Lexical Ontologies for legal Information Sharing) project consists of legal WordNets in six languages (Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, German, Czech, English). Its architecture is based on the EuroWordNet (EWN) framework (Vossen et al, 1997). Using the EWN framework assures compatibility of the LOIS WordNets with EWN, allowing them to function as an...
متن کاملEnhance legal retrieval applications with an automatically induced knowledge base
ABSTRACT In this paper, we would address a challenge faced by the legal retrieval application communities: how to build up better queries for more accurate legal information retrieval. Comparing with other retrieval applications, legal retrieval usually involves more background contexts which are documented before the retrieval process starts. This is very di erent from other retrieval applicat...
